Almighty Flood Claims Catching Out Insurers

FLOODING in Bundaberg shocked more than locals – even insurers offering cover for such inundation were caught out.

It struck last month, with the coastal Queensland town’s Burnett River overflowing to the extent houses washed off stumps.

Suncorp, Queensland’s biggest insurer, logged about 1500 flood claims there. Some were unexpected.

“It was a one in 500-year event, therefore the water was two or three metres higher than anyone thought it was going to be,” Suncorp chief executive Patrick Snowball told The Courier-Mail.

“There are a lot of people who thought their houses would never flood, and we didn’t either. The good thing is we’re fixing them again.”

Brisbane-based Suncorp is the only major insurer to divulge this anecdote among players including RACQ Insurance and IAG – companies which introduced compulsory flood cover years after Suncorp. It raises questions about the precision of the sector’s flood mapping, with 2011’s inundation also hitting some unanticipated areas.

But Mr Snowball argued the Bundaberg flooding did not reflect poorly on Suncorp’s pricing accuracy.

“It reflects entirely the effectiveness of the Almighty,” he said, adding insurers did not price on 1-500 year risks, with 1-200 being a standard worldwide.

The issue of pricing for floods comes amid concerns about overall premium affordability.

Profit results this week from IAG, owner of NRMA and CGU, show it reaped a 17.5 per cent rise in home premiums and “rate increases represent most of this growth”.

Suncorp’s more detailed accounts showed average home premium rises of 16 per cent – and some people have seen far larger jumps.

Premium rises affect the likes of Woodridge local Ted Bull, who complained his bill for a non-flood area had gone from $799.15 to $1070.50. That’s a 34 per cent rise, although the value of property protected also rose.

“When you’re on the pension, that’s quite a jump,” he said.

Christchurch Earthquake Anniversary

The empty concrete site of the CTV Building collapse has been opened up today for grieving friends and family to pay their respects on the second anniversary of the February 22 earthquake.

After the one-hour civic memorial service in nearby Latimer Square, which was used as an emergency triage centre after the deadly quake hit at 12.51pm, many made the 100 metre pilgrimage to the CTV site.

Crowds gathered in tearful, hugging groups to pay their respects to the 115 people who perished in the six-storey building’s collapse and subsequent fire.

The mourners – many from overseas who came to remember the dozens of people from the King’s Education School for English Language who died – left flowers, hand-written notes and private prayers.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says the site will be open until 6.30pm.

A sign posted on a security fence says, “Our hearts and thoughts are with you all today.”
Earlier, at the intimate memorial service attended by around 1000 people, Prime Minister John Key said February 22 will always be a poignant day for the people of Canterbury.

Addressing grieving families, he said: “I know it’s a difficult day for you. Your grief is still raw and only time can numb the pain of your loss. The city and country still feels for you.”

He paid tribute to the “strength and resolve of Cantabrians” who have lost homes and businesses and suffered disruption and anxiety.

Sister Hazel – Happy

Sister Hazel – Happy

Sister Hazel - Happy

Formed: 1993 in Gainesville, FL
Years Active: 90 ‘s, 00’s
Genre: ROCK

Combining elements of acoustic rock, folk, and jangle pop, Sister Hazel formed in 1993 in Gainesville, FL. The band’s five members all boasted ties to the city’s local scene; vocalist/guitarist Ken Block and guitarist/vocalist Andrew Copeland canvassed the coffee shop circuit as a duo, lead guitarist Ryan Newell honed his chops with the local band Waterdog, bassist Jett Beres studied his instrument while pursuing a degree in architecture, and drummer Mark Trojanowski played with several Florida-based jazz ensembles before pursuing a career in pop music. Forging an earthy, melodic sound that highlighted the band’s vocal harmonies, Sister Hazel released an eponymous debut in 1994 before moving to a major label for their second album, 1997’s Somewhere More Familiar.

“All for You” topped the adult alternative charts during the summer of 1997, nearly reaching the national Top Ten in the process, and the success propelled the album to platinum status. After touring heavily and taking another turn in the recording studio, Sister Hazel returned in the summer of 2000 with a follow-up album, Fortress. Released by Universal Records, the album was cut from the same pop/rock cloth as its predecessor, and “Change Your Mind” enjoyed modest popularity as a single. Fortress still failed to match the band’s early success, however, and Sister Hazel were no longer part of Universal’s roster by the time their next album, Chasing Daylight, appeared in 2003. They returned a year later with Lift, and despite Sister Hazel’s relative absence from the airwaves, the group continued to cultivate a respectable grassroots following, using the Internet to their advantage and touring relentlessly.

A series of farming mishaps each provoke the laconic comment — “bugger”.

This was the formula behind one of NZ’s most iconic advertisements. Made by Saatchis to follow up the beloved Barry Crump/Lloyd Scott Toyota ads, and directed by Tony Williams, it attracted 120 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (who ruled that “bugger” was unlikely to cause serious offence).

The shock value of that word, the role of Hercules the dog, and the performance of the hapless farmer (in the tradition of Dagg and Footrot), made for Kiwi pop culture magic.

Hercules, the famous canine star of the infamous Toyota “bugger” ads, has died.

The Huntaway cross, who was 12, lived for some years at the Funny Farm at Clevedon in south Auckland.

He recently moved to the Rescue Zoo at Tuakau.

Hercules was famous for ending up spread-eagled in the mud in Toyota’s ute ads for which he won 17 international awards.

He began his film career in the original Hercules and Xena Warrior Princess series and starred in 35 feature films and 80 ads.

As well as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and What Became of the Broken-Hearted, Hercules was about to take part in the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe.

He died while working on a film set in Auckland.

His trainer Mark Vette says the 12-year-old was one of the world’s best known animal stars.

Tesco Everyday Value Beefburgers Contained 29 Per Cent Horse Meat

I went to a Tesco café yesterday and ordered a burger. They asked me if I wanted anything on it, and I said: ‘Yes — a fiver each way.’

Does anyone have a tooth pick? I had a Tesco burger last night and there’s still a bit between my teeth.

My daughter has always wanted a pony, so I’m buying her a Tesco Quarter Pounder for her birthday.

I’ve got some Tesco burgers in the fridge. But . . . THEY’RE OFFFFFFFFF!

My doctor told me to watch what I eat, so I went out and bought tickets for the Grand National.

If you think horse meat’s bad, wait until you try Tesco’s veggie burgers. They’re made of genuine uniQuorn.

Scientist: ‘Sir, we’ve discovered horse meat in your burgers.’
Tesco boss: ‘Why the long face?’

I won’t eat Tesco burgers. They may be low in fat, but they have a very high Shergar content.

Tesco are giving treble points on your Clubcard for all burgers and petrol, starting today. The deal’s called Only Fuel and Horses.

They’ve found horse meat in Tesco burgers? It’s an unbridled disaster.

A Tesco burger walks into a bar. ‘A pint please.’
‘I can’t hear you,’ says the barman.
‘Sorry’ replies the burger. ‘I’m a little bit horse.’

I selected some burgers on the Tesco website. And then clicked ‘Add to cart.’

What do you call a burnt Tesco burger?                             Black Beauty

LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem

LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem

LMFAO - Party Rock Anthem

This year, the entire world is shuffling to LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem.” So far, the unstoppable track from the Los Angeles-based duo has topped iTunes charts in seven countries, and spent weeks atop the English pop charts in April and May, when the duo kept artists such as Chris Brown and Jennifer Lopez from reaching the number one slot across the pond. As further testament to the global love for the song, the vibrant music video passed twenty million views on Vevo in under two months

And LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” (featuring Lauren Bennett and GoonRock), is just the opening round of Redfoo and Sky Blu’s forthcoming full-length album, Sorry For Party Rocking (Party Rock/will.i.am/Cherry Tree/Interscope).

“Sorry for party rocking is a party person’s excuse for having fun,” explains Redfoo, LMFAO’s member known for his gravity-defying afro.

“It’s the excuse you give when someone complains,” he continues. “Let’s say your parents say ‘stop shuffling upstairs you’re waking me up!’ You can now just say ‘Sorry for party rocking, Mom…sorry for having fun.’”

Redfoo’s nephew, Sky Blu, echoes the sentiment, minus the apology. “We rock the party and lead by example,” says LMFAO’s lyrical wordsmith.

The duo is without question having fun in 2011, celebrating their successes by partying to the seriously infectious dance songs they have created, which prove as irresistible to radio as they do to DJs in clubs worldwide.

“We make all kinds of records, and we’re serious about what we do,” says Sky Blu.

Flo Rida – Whistle

Flo Rida – Whistle

Flo Rida - Whistle

Over the last several years, Flo Rida has pulled off a pretty neat trick. Not only has the Florida-born rapper become a chart fixture thanks to the blockbuster singles “Low (feat. T-Pain),” “Right Round,” “Club Can’t Handle Me,” and his most recent chart-topping hits, “Good Feeling” and “Wild Ones (feat. Sia),” he’s also broken down barriers by uniting millions of fans of pop, hip-hop, and club music around the world and establishing himself as an international, genre-busting superstar in the process. Flo Rida brings his experiences traveling the globe to his fourth album, Wild Ones.

“Over the last few years, I’ve been everywhere — Africa, Japan, Greece, South America, Russia, the Middle East, Australia, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, and all over the United States and Europe,” Flo says. “You name it, I went there. I got to go to the best clubs and the most extreme parties and that really influenced this album. With this album, I definitely feel like I have to show people that I’m the life of the party.” Songs like the “Good Feeling” and “Let It Roll” are addictive, upbeat party jams. His newest single, “Whistle,” opens with an acoustic guitar and infectious whistle chime, already proving to be the song of the summer. Jennifer Lopez adds her sultry vocals to the club-ready “Sweet Spot,” and Redfoo of LMFAO helps keep the party going on the bonus track “Run.” “On each album I try to show a lot of versatility, but every time it’s going to get bigger and bigger, because there’s no way I can give my fans the same old thing.”

Wild Ones, is an envelope-pushing collection of party-friendly anthems that showcases Flo Rida’s signature stop-and-go flow, melodic sensibility, massive hooks, and billion-dollar beats, as well as his clever lyricism. “I like to sit down and come up with a melody first, before I even apply the lyrics,” he says. “Because when you’re creating a track, you should become an instrument, not just rap over a beat. For me to connect with a track, it has to be soulful.” Read More:     http://www.officialflo.com/about

Flo Rida

Rapper Flo Rida is the Carol City native being dubbed the new ‘It’ man of Hip-Hop, and it’s easy to see why. With no prior studio record and relatively moderate promotion of his profile, the rapper gained respect through his debut single ‘Low’ feat. T-Pain. On Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song went from #91 in the first week to #64 before finally taking a big leap to #4. In its fourth week, the single held strong to the same position despite new competitors that kept turning up. Radio outlets gave heavy spins of the song and its digital download on iTunes rocketed to over 120,000 hits. Ringtone request meanwhile, was also constantly pouring in, nailing the song a third position on Billboard Hot RingMaster chart. With such attainment early in his career, there is no doubt that his name may be put in line with the kings of Hip-Hop someday.  Read more: http://www.aceshowbiz.com/celebrity/flo_rida/biography.html#ixzz2LXmfrv4q

Dwight Yoakam – A Thousand Miles From Nowhere

Dwight Yoakam – A Thousand Miles From Nowhere

Dwight Yoakam - A Thousand Miles From Nowhere

Few entertainers have attained the iconic status of Dwight Yoakam.  Perhaps that is because so few have consistently and repeatedly met the high standard of excellence delivered by the Kentucky native no matter what his endeavor. His name immediately conjures up compelling, provocative images: A pale cowboy hat with the brim pulled low; poured-on blue jeans; intricate, catchy melodies paired with poignant, brilliant lyrics that mesmerize with their indelible imprint.  Then there’s Yoakam the actor, who seemingly melts into his roles, impressively standing toe-to-toe with some of the world’s top thespians: Jodie Foster, Tommy Lee Jones, Forest Whitaker, Nicholas Cage. Add to that Yoakam the entrepreneur and you have a singular talent without peer.

Yoakam’s latest Warner Bros. album, 3 Pears, exemplifies his ability to incorporate multiple, competing influences into a piece of cohesive art. It balances his country core with a fiercely independent embrace of rock, Americana, pop and soul. It blends Yoakam’s respect for his musical predecessors with the collaborative assistance of modern singer/songwriter Beck, who co-produced two tracks, and current rocker Kid Rock, who co-wrote the hooky opener, “Take Hold Of My Hand.” But most importantly, 3 Pears builds on his trademark edginess with a notable, growing positivity.

“The music just kind of dropped in, in that way,” Yoakam reflects. “Music is a bit of a mystery. Like all emotions are. And I think maybe it was something I needed to express and to share with the world at large, something positive when all of us are kind of carrying around this collective, emotional weight.”

Much has been made that the Kentucky-born, Ohio-raised Yoakam was too country for Nashville when he first sought out his musical fortune in the mid-80s, but the truth is his music has always been too unique, too ruggedly individualistic to fit neatly into any one box. Like the icons he so admires –Elvis, Merle, Buck– Yoakam is one of a kind. He has taken his influences and filtered them into his own potent blend of country and rock that honors his musical predecessors and yet creates something beautifully new. As Vanity Fair declared, “Yoakam strides the divide between rock’s lust and country’s lament.”
