Charlie Chaplin Biography

Charlie Chaplin Biography

Charlie Chaplin Biography

Born on April 16, 1889, in London, England, Charlie Chaplin worked with a children’s dance troupe before making a huge mark on the big screen. His character “The Tramp” relied on pantomime and quirky movements to become an iconic figure of the silent-film era. Chaplin went on to become a director, making films like City Lights and Modern Times, and co-founded the United Artists Corporation. He died in Corsier-sur-Vevey, Vaud, Switzerland, on December 25, 1977.

Early Life

Famous for his character “The Tramp,” the sweet little man with a bowler hat, mustache and cane, Charlie Chaplin was an iconic figure of the silent-film era and one of film’s first superstars, elevating the industry in a way few could have ever imagined.

Born Charles Spencer Chaplin in London, England, on April 16, 1889, Charlie Chaplin’s rise to fame is a true rags-to-riches story. His father, a notorious drinker, abandoned Chaplin, his mother and his older half-brother, Sydney, not long after Chaplin’s birth. That left Chaplin and his brother in the hands of their mother, a vaudevillian and music hall singer who went by the stage name Lily Harley.

Chaplin’s mother, who would later suffer severe mental issues and have to be committed to an asylum, was able to support her family for a few years. But in a performance that would introduce her youngest boy to the world of performance, Hannah inexplicably lost her voice in the middle of a show, prompting the stage manager to push the five-year-old Chaplin, whom he’d heard sing, onto the stage to replace her.

Chaplin lit up the audience, wowing them with his natural presence and comedic angle (at one point he imitated his mother’s cracking voice). But the episode meant the end for Hannah. Her singing voice never returned and she eventually ran out of money. For a time, Charlie and Sydney had to make a new, temporary home for themselves in London’s tough workhouses. How Daddy Chose Junior By Cesar Millan

How Daddy Chose Junior By Cesar Millan

How Daddy Chose JuniorBy Cesar Millan

Every February 19th, I have moments of sadness, as it marks the anniversary that my pit bull Daddy passed away. I still miss him terribly but when I think of all the amazing times we had together and all the great things that he taught me, I realize how lucky I was to have had him in my life for so long. And when I look in Junior’s eyes, I think about the last gift Daddy gave to me.

I had never had a dog quite like Daddy. When my boys, Andre and Calvin, were little, I knew I could leave him to entertain them while I was busy; he helped teach Andre to walk. And when one of the boys fell down, Daddy would be right there, licking him and making sure he was okay.

Daddy as Friend, Mentor and Therapist

Daddy was everything that I could want: friend, dog, mentor, and therapist. My goal is always to stay centered, but that’s not always possible. I get stressed and emotional, but seeing Daddy as he stayed in the moment, reminded me of how beautiful things really are and got me back to where I should be. He was much wiser than I am when it comes to evaluating dogs—and people, too.

So you see I could never really replace him.

But Daddy was 15 and getting old, I’d known for a while that I would have to adopt another pit bull.

When the time came, I took Daddy along. Any newcomer in our house would first have to get Daddy’s approval. That’s how we wound up at the home of a friend whose female pit bull had given birth to a litter about two months earlier. One puppy, all gray with just a little dash of white on his chest, caught my attention immediately. Some people—the Dalai Lama, for instance—have this calm energy. So do some dogs. Daddy had it. And I quickly realized that this little gray puppy had it too. In fact, he reminded me of Daddy when he was a puppy.

So he’d passed the Cesar test—but would he pass the Daddy test? Daddy was already elderly, and older dogs sometimes just don’t want to deal with an energetic puppy. So I hesitated to stress him out with a young dog.

You can’t believe how well it went. The puppy immediately lowered his head, surrendering to the older dog, and allowed Daddy to smell him all over. Then, amazingly, he started following Daddy around. In a second, he had transferred his loyalty from his littermates and his mother to Daddy.

And Daddy accepted him. It was like Daddy was telling me, “He’ll be just as good as I was.” When I left my friend’s house, Daddy followed me—and the puppy followed Daddy.

Cesar Millan Dog Whisperer

Cesar Millan Dog Whisperer

Cesar Millan Dog Whisperer

I am Cesar Millan, star of “Leader of the Pack,” and I have two missions. One is to confront the global issue of canine abandonment by giving “unadoptable” dogs a second chance at life. The other is to teach you how to be a pack leader, and achieve balance and harmony with your dogs.

It is my hope that “Leader of the Pack” will prevent the deaths of so many innocent dogs. My goal with this show is to awaken the world to how many dogs are killed unnecessarily every year, how we kill them, and how the world really treats what we call man’s best friend. By recognizing what is really happening around the world, we can save the lives of millions of dogs by respecting their love.

Each episode is a journey showing the difficult situation of rescued dogs and demonstrating that it’s not about the breed, age, or history of the dog — it´s about the human who handles the dog.

I began this journey in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, and grew up working with animals on my grandfather’s farm. Because of my natural way with dogs, they would follow me everywhere. Other kids would bully me and call me el perrero—”the dirty dog boy.” But I tried to not let the negativity get to me, and for my 13th birthday my wish was to become the best dog trainer in the world.

Cesar Family Photo

It’s no secret that I jumped the border into the US when I was 21. Here I spoke no English and knew no one. I was homeless living on the streets for 2 months and eventually got a job as a dog groomer and dog walker. So here’s a Mexican guy walking 30 or 40 dogs off leash. I didn’t even know walking dogs off leash was illegal.

I developed a following and got a reputation for being able to work with the most aggressive dogs. In 1994, I met Jada Pinkett, then a sitcom actress (now Jada Pinkett Smith, after her marriage to Will Smith). She became one of my clients and biggest supporters. When I told her I wanted to be on TV, she told me I needed to learn English first and she even paid for my English tutor for the year.

Then after a profile of me ran in the Los Angeles Times, I was approached by several production companies to develop a TV show. I started working on a pilot for Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan. It first aired in 2004 on National Geographic and would become National Geographic’s #1 show. The show is now on Nat Geo WILD and broadcast in more than 80 countries!

I got married in 1994 and had two sons, Andre in 1995 and Calvin in 2001. But in June 2010, I received news of my divorce while in London and it made my whole world come down. I felt defeated, a big sense of guilt and failure. I had my boys with me, but I wasn’t feeling good. I was at the lowest level I had ever been emotionally and psychologically. It was also my first summer without Daddy, who had passed on the previous February after being with me for nearly sixteen years. In fact, Daddy had helped Andre learn how to walk, and had helped me rehabilitate many a dog and train many a dog lover. He also helped me pick out his protégé, Junior, who joined the pack as a puppy in 2008 and has grown into another calm and mellow pit bull ambassador. He has been especially helpful in dealing with aggressive dogs. Although Junior has been attacked, he has never retaliated. He just calmly stands his ground, which defuses the situation.

Richard Branson Biography

Richard Branson Biography

Richard Branson Biography

Born July 18, 1950, in Surrey, England, Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson struggled in school and dropped out at age 16, a decision that ultimately lead to the creation of Virgin Records. His entrepreneurial projects started in the music industry and expanded into other sectors making Branson a billionaire. His Virgin Group holds more than 200 companies, including the recent Virgin Galactic,a space tourism company. Branson is also known for his adventurous spirit and sporting achievements such as crossing oceans in a hot-air-balloon.

Early Life

Richard Charles Nicholas Branson was born on July 18, 1950, in Surrey, England. His father, Edward James Branson, worked as a barrister. His mother, Eve Branson, was employed as a flight attendant. Richard, who struggled with dyslexia, had a hard time with educational institutions. He nearly failed out of the all-boys Scaitcliffe School, which he attended until the age of 13. He then transferred to Stowe School, a boarding school in Stowe, Buckinghamshire, England.

Still struggling, Branson dropped out at the age of 16 to start a youth-culture magazine called Student. The publication, run by students, for students, sold $8,000 worth of advertising in its first edition, which was launched in 1966. The first run of 50,000 copies was disseminated for free, after Branson covered the costs with advertising.

By 1969, Branson was living in a London commune, surrounded by the British music and drug scene. It was during this time that Branson had the idea to begin a mail-order record company called Virgin to help fund his magazine efforts. The company performed modestly, but made Branson enough that he was able to expand his business venture, adding a record shop in Oxford Street, London. With the success of the record shop, the high school drop-out was able to build a recording studio in 1972 in Oxfordshire, England.

Virgin Records

His first artist on the Virgin Records label, Mike Oldfield, recorded his single “Tubular Bells” in 1973 with the help of Branson’s team. The song was an instant smash, staying on the UK charts for 247 weeks. Using the momentum of Oldfield’s success, Branson then signed other aspiring musical groups to label, including the Sex Pistols. Artists such as the Culture Club, the Rolling Stones, and Genesis would follow, helping to make Virgin Music one of the top six record companies in the world. Read More…..biography.com

Fatty Arbuckle Scandal

Fatty Arbuckle Scandal

Fatty Arbuckle Scandal

At a raucous, three-day party in 1921, a young starlet became severely ill and died four days later. Newspapers went wild with the story: popular silent-screen comedian Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle had killed Virginia Rappe with his weight while savagely raping her. Though the newspapers of the day reveled in the gory, rumored details, juries found little evidence that Arbuckle was in any way connected with her death.

What happened at that party and why was the public so ready to believe “Fatty” was guilty?

Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle had long been a performer. When he was a teenager, Arbuckle traveled the West Coast on the vaudeville circuit. In 1913, at the age of 26, Arbuckle hit the big time when he signed with Mack Sennett’s Keystone Film Company and became one of the Keystone Kops.

Arbuckle was heavy – he weighed somewhere between 250 and 300 pounds – and that was part of his comedy. He moved gracefully, threw pies, and humorously tumbled.

In 1921, Arbuckle signed a three-year contract with Paramount for $1 million – an unheard of amount at the time, even in Hollywood. To celebrate just having finished three pictures at the same time and to celebrate his new contract with Paramount, Arbuckle and a couple of friends drove up from Los Angeles to San Francisco on Saturday, September 3, 1921 for some Labor Day weekend revelry. Weirdest New Obama Taxes

Weirdest New Obama Taxes

Weirdest New Obama Taxes Proposed Include Flavored Vodka, Golf Courses

President Barack Obama has plenty of taxes in his budget proposal, with his plan to achieve $1.8 trillion in revenue featuring some truly weird ideas.

Not necessarily good, or bad. Just weird in the sense that you’d never expect or hear about them, unlike the public sequestration or fiscal cliff debates.

President Obama wants to establish a “Buffett Rule” of a 30 percent minimum tax rate for people making over $1 million in a year. That he’s made clear.

Far less clear? Some of the other means of increasing revenue included in his 246-page budget. Here’s a look at the five weirdest Obama taxes …

  1. Flavored Vodka. Distilled spirits currently get a tax break if they include flavors. No idea why, but under Obama’s new budget, they won’t anymore.
  2. Golf Courses. Buying land for the purpose of conserving or preserving “recreational amenities,” golf among them, is currently a tax deduction. No longer.
  3. Cigarettes. Current taxed at just under $1.01 per pack federally, Obama (who himself smokes at times) suggests raising that to $1.95 per pack.
  4. Corporate Jets. Also known as the Dead Horse Tax, because Obama has been beating this one hard for years. Just kidding … mostly.
  5. Businesses Can’t Deduct Punitive Damages. You can no longer claim a loss on money you have to pay if someone sues you and you lose.

This all assumes Obama’s budget passes, which in the GOP-controlled House is far from certain. But it gives you an idea of some of his fiscal ideas.

How will Obama’s second term go?

Very well, we’re on the right track!
Better than the last four years at least
Terrible, we’re doomed!
