The Milli Vanilli Tragedy

The Milli Vanilli Tragedy

Milli Vanilli. The mere mention of the name still calls up the same derision it did when the dance-pop duo’s career came to a sudden and ignominious end:

Fakers. Frauds. A blatant marketing scam. Their story has been retold countless times: after selling millions of records, Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan were revealed to be models who publicly lip-synced to tracks recorded by anonymous studio vocalists. They became the first act ever stripped of a Grammy award and came to symbolize everything people disliked about dance-pop: it was so faceless that every musician involved could remain anonymous without anyone knowing the difference, so mechanical and artificial that the people who constructed it had to hire models to give it any human appeal, so pandering and superficial that people bought it just for its attachment to a pretty face.

Whether that assessment was fair or not, it was beyond easy to hold Milli Vanilli in contempt. Yet for all the scapegoating, they were far from the only dance-pop act to be fronted by lip-syncers in the late ’80s (the Martha Wash-voiced Black Box and C+C Music Factory spring to mind), nor were they the only Europop act to employ similar marketing tactics. (They were simply the most successful and visible, since their incorporation of rap made them more appealing to Americans.) What’s more, pop music had a long tradition of hits recorded by anonymous studio musicians, dating back to ’50s instrumental combos and ’60s bubblegum.
Milli Vanilli had the bad luck to get caught in a hoax during the extraordinarily image-conscious MTV era and a time when dance music of any stripe was accorded virtually no critical respect anyway, before its producers were perceived as the real creative points of focus. It’s not as though Milli Vanilli were acclaimed for their honesty of expression before the scandal broke; it’s more likely that what fuelled the backlash was public resentment over Rob and Fab’s celebrity (why should they be famous if they couldn’t sing?) and embarrassment over the fact that Milli Vanilli’s marketing had worked like a charm on everyone right up through the Grammy committee.  Source allmusic

Goat Edition Songs The Ultimate TOP 15

If you’re among the millions who have spent a significant portion of the past month watching videos of goats yelling like humans, you may have wondered: Why do goats yell like that? Are they distressed? Do they yell for any particular reason? Are they trying to tell us something?

We asked the goat experts. The first thing we learned is that the goat experts are not amused. “Maybe for some it is entertaining,” Dr. An Peischel of Tennesse State University told me. “I am a goat producer and don’t consider it entertainment at all.”

They were quick to point out that some of these “goats” are not, in fact, goats at all. “The individuals making the noises were not all goats,” wrote Dr. Peischel, “There are several sheep involved.”

Yelling, for goats, is not unusual. They will yell for all sorts of reasons. “Mother goats call for their young when they get separated,” explained goat specialist Dr. Daniel Waldron of Texas A&M, and “young kid goats also call for their mothers.” “Goats may also ‘yell’ when they expect to get fed,” continued Dr. Waldron. “If I feed one pen of goats, the second pen may start ‘yelling’ because they want to be fed right now.”

Dr. Jean-Marie Luginbuhl of North Carolina State, a specialist in meat goats, agreed. “In my experience with goats, it does not take much for them to scream bloody murder, as if you are torturing them, when simply handling them.”  Read More: http://www.slate.com

Fainting Goats

Fainting Goats

Fainting Goats

myotonic goat, otherwise known as the fainting goat, is a domestic goat whose muscles freeze for roughly 10 seconds when the goat feels panic. Though painless, this generally results in the animal collapsing on its side. The characteristic is caused by a hereditary genetic disorder called myotonia congenita. When startled, younger goats will stiffen and fall over. Older goats learn to spread their legs or lean against something when startled, and often they continue to run about in an awkward, stiff-legged shuffle. Slightly smaller than standard breeds of the goat, fainting goats are generally 43 to 64 cm (17 to 25 in) tall and can weigh anywhere from 27 to 79 kg (60 to 170 lb). Males, or bucks, as they are often referred to can be as heavy as 200 pounds.  They have large, prominent eyes in high sockets. Their hair can be short or long, with certain individuals producing a great deal of cashmere during colder months. There appears to be no angora strain of the fainting goat. Common coat colours are black and white; however, most possible coat colours are found in this breed.

Fainting goats have many other names, including Myotonic Goats, Tennessee (Meat) Goats, Nervous Goats, Stiff-leg Goats, Wooden-leg Goats, and Tennessee Fainting Goats. They are smaller and somewhat easier to care for and maintain than larger meat goat breeds, which makes the fainting goat desirable for smaller farms. They are also raised as pet or show animals as they can be friendly, intelligent, easy to keep, and amusing. The “Fainting Goat” myth was tested on the U.S. television show Mythbusters

Fainting goats have a muscle condition, which is called myotonia congenita. This is a condition which occurs in many species, including humans. The goats do not truly “faint” in any sense of the word, as they never lose consciousness because of their myotonia. They remain fully conscious.  Read More At wikipedia

Peter Tosh And Mick Jagger – Walk And Don t Look Back

Peter Tosh And Mick Jagger – Walk And Don t Look Back

Peter Tosh And Mick Jagger - Walk And Don t Look Back

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Twenty-five years after his murder, Jamaica’s government on Monday honored the contributions of firebrand reggae musician and songwriter Peter Tosh, one of the Caribbean island’s musical giants.

Tosh’s daughter Niambe, an educator from Boston, Massachusetts, received the posthumous “order of merit” – the country’s third highest honor – on behalf of her late father during an annual national awards ceremony on the lawns of King’s House, the residence of Jamaica’s governor general.

Tosh was a founding member of the Wailers, forming the three-man core of the group with Bob Marley and Bunny “Wailer” Livingston. Hard-hitting solo albums like “Equal Rights” and his work with the Wailers helped make homegrown reggae music known internationally. He was cut down at age 42 in 1987, murdered by robbers in his Jamaican home.

The always outspoken, defiant Tosh was known for forcefully denouncing apartheid, government corruption and calling for the legalization of marijuana. Musical colleagues and fans say the lanky, baritone singer and guitarist was a mesmerizing performer with a charismatic, larger-than-life personality.

Tosh is perhaps reggae’s most controversial figure. During the government-organized One Love Peace Concert of 1978, Tosh publicly accused Jamaica’s political leaders and the middle class of backing police brutality and politically charged gang warfare amid a legendary 20-minute diatribe. The Jamaican media severely criticized Tosh for the speech, delivered to an audience that included 200 foreign journalists and the prime minister.

For his uncompromising views and his insistence on openly smoking marijuana, the Rastafarian musician was severely beaten by police on several occasions, sustaining 32 stitches in his head, a broken rib, a fractured arm, and a punctured spleen during these altercations, according to former manager Herbie Miller.

For Miller, who is also curator of the Jamaica Music Museum, the honor for the former Wailer was a long time coming. He lobbied Jamaican administrations for years to formally recognize Tosh’s accomplishments.

“When you are about truth and rights and bucking the system, government recognition comes after a long wait,” Miller said Monday.

Roger Steffens, a noted reggae historian who interviewed Tosh on several occasions, said the musician believed that awards from “Babylon” – the Rastafarian religion’s unflattering term for the Western world and the inadequate realities of life – were meaningless to him during his lifetime.

Like Marley, Tosh “believed that ‘Babylon have no fruits’ and awards from the oppressors were meaningless. Whether the past 25 years would have mellowed (him), or made him even more unyieldingly militant, is difficult to predict,” said Steffens, who described Tosh as the “Malcom X of reggae.”

But for his family, the Monday ceremony was a big deal. Andrew Tosh, a veteran reggae musician who was 20 when his father was killed, said the award will help keep his musical and cultural legacy alive.

“I’m feeling really good that he’s finally getting honored,” said the younger Tosh.

With the Wailers, Tosh co-wrote the black power anthem “Get Up, Stand Up” and penned songs like “400 Years,” a scathing song about slavery. After he left the group in 1973, just as the Wailers’ album “Catch a Fire” was winning reggae a global audience, Tosh formed his own band – Word, Sound and Power – and wrote more songs filled with political content. “Mama Africa” denounced apartheid in South Africa; “Legalize It” called for the legalization of marijuana.

Receiving lesser government awards on Monday were reggae luminaries Toots Hibbert, Lee “Scratch Perry, and Tosh’s former Wailers bandmate Bunny Livingston.

Big Mountain – Baby I Love Your Way

Big Mountain – Baby I Love Your Way

Big Mountain - Baby I Love Your Way

Big Mountain evolved from a San Diego, Californian reggae band, the Rainbow Warriors, in the mid-80s. They toured the USA playing gigs to the uninitiated, introducing a diluted form of reggae to American ears. The multicultural line-up, featuring Quino (vocals), Gregory Blakney (drums), Jerome Cruz (guitar), Lance Rhodes (drums, percussion), Manfred Reinke (keyboards) and Lynn Copeland (bass), released 1992’s Wake Up on the Quality label.

A revamped line-up, featuring Quino, Copeland, Santa Davis (drums), James McWhinney (percussion), Billy Stoll (keyboards), Michael Hyde (keyboards), and leading Jamaican session player Tony Chin (lead guitar), convened to record their second album. In 1994, they released a version of Peter Frampton’s ‘Baby, I Love Your Way’, which when featured in the movie Reality Bites became an international bestseller, peaking at UK number 2 and US number 6. The single also featured a Spanish version, enabling the band to enjoy successful sales in the South American market. The hit was followed by ‘Sweet Sensual Love’, performed in both English and Spanish, although it only reached number 51 in the UK pop chart. Unity followed, selling over a million copies worldwide.

The band’s accomplishment led to successful appearances at Jamaica’s 1994 and 1995 Reggae Sunsplash festivals. They have since been unable to match the success of their first hit, but have continued to record with a number of Jamaica’s top session men, including Sly And Robbie and Handel Tucker. In 1995, the single ‘Caribbean Blue’ failed to make an impression in either the reggae or pop charts. Free Up featured singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow on co-writing credits.

Pink – Just Give Me A Reason ft. Nate Ruess

Pink Just Give Me A Reason ft. Nate Ruess

Singer and songwriter Pink, born Alecia Beth Moore, is best known for her edgy pop music. She gained stardom in the 2002 Moulin Rouge soundtrack with Christina Aguilera. Some claim that Pink has changed the scope of pop music and paved the way for artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga but has received little recognition for it. She is a prominent animal-rights campaigner for PETA.

Early Life

Singer, songwriter. Born Alecia Beth Moore on September 8, 1979, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Pink, as she’s otherwise known, gets her name from the movie Reservoir Dogs, a film she saw as a teenager and whose character Mr. Pink is someone her friends all agreed she resembled.

Pink was the second child born to Jim and Judy Moore. She experienced a largely typical middle-class life in a suburb of Doylestown, Philadelphia. Her parents’ tense relationship, however, caused the couple to divorce when Pink was 3. Their split and the subsequent demise of the marriage sparked, in part, a rebellious attitude from Pink. “I was never allowed to go over to any of my friends’ houses when I was little, because I was a bad influence,” she said of her early life. “None of their parents liked me and my own parents were scared to death of me— and for me.”

Instead, Pink found solace in music, and as early as the age of 13 she was navigating the complicated Philly club scene. By the time she was 14, she was already an experienced vocalist and dancer, and started to write her own songs. She also had a regular singing gig every Friday night at a Philly nightclub. But it proved to be a hard life for her to manage, as she was swallowed by a world of drugs (she nearly overdosed at the age of 15) and petty crime. She eventually dropped out of high school before returning to earn her G.E.D. in 1998.

Harlem Shake (original army edition)

Harlem Shake (original army edition), Something definitely different…..

SORRY ALL – Had to replace with a different clip.
Youtube removed the original version.

The Harlem Shake (original army edition) is an Internet meme in the form of a video in which a group of people performs a comedy sketch accompanied by a short excerpt from the song “Harlem Shake”.
As a meme, the video was replicated by many people, using the same concept, and this rapidly led to it becoming viral in early February 2013, with thousands of “Harlem Shake” videos being made and uploaded to YouTube every day at the height of its popularity.
The form of the meme was established in a video uploaded on February 2 by five teenagers from Queensland, Australia known on YouTube as The Sunny Coast Skate.
The video started a viral trend of people uploading their own “Harlem Shake” videos to YouTube.
The teenagers’ video was a follow-up to a video by a YouTube comedy vlogger named Filthy Frank
which featured a section where several costumed people danced to the song “Harlem Shake” by Baauer.

Justin Timberlake - Mirrors

Justin Randall Timberlake was born on January 31, 1981, in Memphis, Tennessee. Raised a Baptist, Timberlake grew up singing in the church choir. From 1993 to 1995, he performed on The New Mickey Mouse Club, along with pop stars Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and JC Chasez. Afterward, Timberlake and Chasez, along with Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick, formed the all-male singing group ‘N Sync. The wins came on the heels of a controversial Super Bowl performance with Janet Jackson in which Timberlake accidentally tore off a portion of Jackson’s costume revealing her bare breast.

The following year, he released his second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. The album’s lead single, “SexyBack”, spent several consecutive weeks at No. 1. In 2008, Timberlake helped make Madonna’s single, 4 Minutes”, a top ten hit. Gipsy Kings – Volare

Gipsy Kings – Volare

Gipsy Kings - Volare

HISTORY and BIOGRAPHY

The Gipsy Kings consist of two bands of brothers: the Reyes (Nicolas, Canut, Paul, Patchai, Andre) and the Baliardos (Tonino, Paco, Diego). The Reyes and Baliardo boys were the offspring of Spanish gypsy families that had fled into France to escape Spain’s Civil War. They grew up roaming the south of France, working harvests and making music.

Jose Reyes father of the GK Reyes sang alongside guitarist Manitas de Plata and did much to popularise flamenco internationally: John Steinbeck, Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso, Miles Davis and Salvador Dali were amongst the duos admirers Jose split from Manitas in the 1970s and formed Los Reyes with his teenage sons. His death devastated the Reyes yet lead to their fortuitous encounter with the Baliardos at the St. Marie de la Mer Gitan pilgrimage. On that warm night, as they passed the guitar, shared songs and wine, history was shaped.
Initially, the Reyes and Baliardos busked on the streets of Cannes, played weddings and parties, young men flavouring flamenco with Western pop and Latin rhythms. When an American admirer told the band their name Los Reyes meant “The Kings” in English they realised they were born to be Gipsy Kings. In 1987 The Gipsy Kings self-titled debut album introduced the world to rumba Gitano the sound of South America rumba rhythm married to flamenco guitars  and with Bamboleo the Gipsy Kings scored a huge international hit. Since then the Kings have never stopped singing to the world.
Today the Gipsy Kings still live with their families in the south of France. Life may have changed for them  they no longer busk on streets or pick crops when times are hard or travel in caravans  but still, at heart, they remain Gypsies, the proud descendants of an ancient people who seduced the world with music and dance. On Pasajero, the Gipsy Kings continue their epic musical journey.
