Stay with me – Sam Smith

Stay with me – Sam Smith

Stay with me - Sam Smith

Sam Smith, a 21-year-old singer from London with milk-white skin and a tightly swirled pompadour, has made a name for himself as the soulful guest vocalist for dance music’s new wave, including breakout electronic group Disclosure, producer Naughty Boy and disco veteran Nile Rodgers. Now, with a debut solo album and tour on the way, he’s attempting to go it alone.

The transition from guest star to solo act can be difficult, but plenty of people are betting on his success. In December, he won the 2014 Brits Critic’s Choice Award and earlier this month, he won the BBC’s “Sound of 2014” music critics poll, which often predicts commercial success. (Past winners include Adele, 50 Cent and Ellie Goulding.)

He’s also demonstrated strong ticket sales. Most of his European tour dates have sold out well in advance. All of his U.S. performances sold out last year—including two nights at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, the first of which sold out in less than 24 hours. He recently announced a 10-city North American tour to promote his forthcoming album, “In the Lonely Hour,” due out in the U.S. on June 3. The San Francisco date sold out in a day.

Critics praise the fluid quality of Mr. Smith’s voice as well as his emotional lyrics and almost bashful stage presence.
Over the next six months, Capitol Records will shift from coordinating buzzy collaborations to launching Mr. Smith’s solo career, culminating in the release of his album. “We’ve had the big collaborative feature songs, but now we’re moving into Sam’s own music,” said Greg Thompson, executive vice president of Capitol Music Group.

Before the album makes its debut, the label plans to release an EP in February in the U.S., and then have Mr. Smith begin touring while his songs are promoted on college radio. “You need that time to drum up people’s appetite,” Mr. Thompson said.

Growing up in a small town 25 miles north of London, Mr. Smith began training as a jazz singer when he was 8 and had his first manager by age 12. He listened exclusively to female “power singers” until about a year ago, he said, such as Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan and Amy Winehouse, thus the soul and gospel undertones in his music. At 18, he moved to London to tend bar while playing gigs around the city. He met Disclosure in the fall of 2012 through common managers who suggested he sing over the duo’s new track “Latch.” The song became the first single from Disclosure’s debut album “Settle,” which received a 2013 Grammy nomination for Best Dance Album.                                               Read more…..online.wsj.com

Dickies Shorts

Dickies Shorts

Compress the working knowledge of Dickies pants into half the fabric, and you’ve got Dickies Shorts. These Shorts blend function and superior good looks, while playing homage to that warm weather godsend known as the upper thigh breeze. Try and compete with that, pants.

Hot weather makes it harder to work. The heat itself wants to weigh you down, clinging to your skin and creating uncomfortable sweat. They’re lightweight and cool, but they’re made to be tough enough for working.

Cargo Shorts have a comfortable, casual waistband that you’ll love because it fits even after a big meal. The extra room in the seat and thigh make movement easier in twill shorts.

Stains, wrinkles and would-be irritants are foiled by these Shorts’ durable fabrics and re-enforced stitching, and keep your gear on-hand with an abundance of standard-issue pockets. Have chicken legs? Our Shorts have you covered with long in-seams and a variety of hypnotizing colours and cut options.

Dickies Shorts may be, well, short, but they’re still Dickies, and don’t we owe it to ourselves to give respect where it’s due?

Cornell Haynes, Jr. (born November 2, 1974), better known by his stage name Nelly, is an American rapper and singer.

A member of hip hop group St. Lunatics, Nelly was signed to Universal Records in 2000. Nelly’s debut album, “Country Grammar” was released that year, and explores the genres of Southern rap and Pop rap. “Country Grammar” was certified nine times platinum in the United States, and was a mainstream success, debuting at #3 on the Billboard 200 and went on to peak at #1. He released the single “Country Grammar (Hot Shit)” and it peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart and #1 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. Nelly also released the single “Ride wit Me,” featuring fellow St. Lunatic City Spud. The song peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became his highest charting single at that time.

The following year, St. Lunatics released their first album as a group, “Free City,” which received a platinum certification in the United States. Nelly released his second studio work, “Nellyville” in 2002. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. It was also nominated for “Album of the Year” at the 2003 Grammys. The album was certified 6× platinum by the RIAA. Its lead single “Hot in Herre” was a #1 hit. Other singles included “Dilemma” featuring Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, “Work It” featuring Justin Timberlake, “Air Force Ones” featuring Murphy Lee and the St. Lunatics, “Pimp Juice”, and “#1.” The album was certified 6x multi-platinum. “Hot in Herre” won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rap Solo Performance in 2003.

Nelly released a remix album in 2003, titled “Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention.”

In 2004, Nelly released two albums, “Sweat” and “Suit.” “Suit,” an R&B-oriented album, debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart, and “Sweat,” a rap-oriented album, debuted at #2. From “Suit,” the slow ballad “Over and Over,” an unlikely duet with country music star Tim McGraw, became a crossover hit.

In the winter of 2005 “Sweatsuit,” a compilation of tracks from “Sweat” and “Suit” with three new tracks was released. “Grillz,” produced by Jermaine Dupri, was a #1 hit. To date, both albums have sold over 5 million copies in the U.S.

“Brass Knuckles,” Nelly’s fifth studio album, was issued in 2008 and reached #3 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. “Party People,” which features Fergie, was released as the first single from the album and peaked at #40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Stepped on My J’z” which features Ciara and Jermaine Dupri, was released as the second single peaking at #90 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Body on Me” which features Akon and Ashanti, was released as the third single and peaked at #42 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 2010, Nelly released the album “5.0.” The lead single, “Just a Dream,” went to #3 on the Hot 100 chart and was certified platinum in the U.S. The second single, “Move That Body” featuring T-Pain and Akon. The third single “Gone” is the sequel to Nelly’s 2002 worldwide #1 hit “Dilemma,” and also featured Rowland.

Play That Funky Music – Wild Cherry

Play That Funky Music – Wild Cherry

Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry

Rob Parissi (lead vocals & guitar) was raised in the steel mill town of Mingo Junction, Ohio. Parissi graduated from Mingo High School in 1968. Rob formed the band Wild Cherry in 1970 in Steubenville, Ohio, one mile north of Mingo Junction along the Ohio River. The band’s name “Wild Cherry” was taken from a box of cough drops while Rob was recuperating from a brief hospital stay.

The band played the Ohio Valley region,Wheeling, West Virginia and the rest of the Northern West Virginia panhandle, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The original line-up included: Ben Difabbio (drums and vocals), Louie Osso (guitar, lead and background vocals) from Steubenville, Ohio, Larry Brown (bass, lead and background vocals) from Weirton, West Virginia, Larry Mader (keyboards, lead and background vocals) from East Springfield, Ohio, Over time, the band members changed, with Osso, Brown, and Mader leaving the band, replaced by Rob’s cousin, Coogie Stoddart (guitar, lead and background vocals) and Joe Buchmelter (bass). Buchmelter was soon replaced by Buckie Lusk.

Several records before “Play That Funky Music” were released under their own label during the early 1970s, including “You Can Be High (But Lay Low),” date unknown, and “Something Special On Your Mind,” in 1971. The music at this stage was pure rock music, not funk. Wild Cherry eventually gained a record contract with Brown Bag Records, owned and operated by the late Terry Knight of Terry Knight And The Pack fame, who later on without Terry became Grand Funk Railroad, who Terry also produced at the time for Capitol records. Several demos and singles on Knight’s Brown Bag label distributed by United Artists were produced including “Get Down” (1973) and “Show Me Your Badge” (1973).
The band broke up when a disillusioned Parissi left the music scene to become the manager of a local steakhouse. Rob quickly realized that the steakhouse gig was not going to cut it. As his enthusiasm for the music eventually returned, Rob decided to give the business one last shot. Read more…..en.wikipedia.org

Jean-Luc Picard – Patrick Stewart

Jean-Luc Picard – Patrick Stewart

Jean-Luc Picard - Patrick Stewart

Sir Patrick Stewart was born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, on July 13, 1940. His father was a career soldier; his mother worked in industrial weaving. Because Mirfield, a river valley settlement of some 12,000 people, had a rich culture for a provincial town of its size, Stewart’s stage experience started early. His involvement was encouraged when, at the age of twelve while in secondary school, he enrolled in an eight-day drama course, where he met some professional people who were very influential in his life.

Thereafter, his participation in local amateur dramatics increased steadily, even after he quit school at fifteen to work as a reporter. However, his employer resented his dedication to the local theater and finally, after a little more than a year of Stewart’s less than dedicated reporting, he issued Stewart an ultimatum forcing him to choose between acting and journalism. Although it was a very good job, Stewart quit and, out of spite, became determined to prove himself as a professional actor.

To save money for training, he worked for a year as a furniture salesman; then, after consulting the professionals he had met, he enrolled in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1957 at age seventeen. He spent two years there, learning his craft and losing his accent. Stewart speaks of almost living a “double life” during this period, for while he spoke with Received Pronunciation professionally, he continued speaking with his native Yorkshire accent and dialect with family and friends.

After leaving school, Stewart was never out of work, despite a warning from an instructor who told him that his baldness would make him a young character actor rather than a juvenile lead. In fact, Stewart was able to land jobs by convincing directors that with a toupee he could play both, doubling his range and serving as “two actors for the price of one.” His professional stage debut was at the Theatre Royal, Lincoln, in August of 1959, playing Morgan in a stage adaptation of Treasure Island.

Now an internationally respected actor known for successfully bridging the gap between the theatrical world of the Shakespearean stage and contemporary film and television, Sir Patrick Stewart continues to demonstrate his versatility with a wide range of upcoming projects.

In early 2002, Stewart filmed X2: X-Men United, the sequel to 20th Century Fox’s blockbuster X-Men, directed by Bryan Singer from a script by David Hayter and Zak Penn. Stewart reprised his role as ‘Professor Xavier,’ a wheelchair-bound professor said to be the planet’s most powerful telepath, which earned him a nomination for Favorite Actor in the Blockbuster Entertainment Awards. The sequel reunited all the original cast including Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry and Anna Paquin.

In December 2001, Stewart was heard as the voice of King Gobot in Nickelodeon Movies’ computer animated motion picture Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. Martin Short provided the voice of King Gobot’s sidekick Ooblar. The movie was released by Paramount Pictures.

In Fall 2001, Stewart filmed Star Trek: Nemesis, the tenth installment of Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek feature films. He reprised his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and re-teamed with Star Trek cast member Brent Spiner in a script by John Logan(Gladiator). Read more…..www.thepsn.org
