An Australian woman stood up to a group of bandits even as two of her colleagues were hacked to death on a walking trail in Papua New Guinea.

Bathurst-raised Christiana King, 38, has been hailed a hero by injured survivors after she presented herself as the leader of a group of Australian ex-soldiers hiking the Black Cat Trail.

As the military men curled up in the foetal position, Ms King offered the armed killers money in an effort to get them to go away, the Daily Telegraph reports.

The attack on Tuesday left two porters dead and four Australian tourists seriously injured.

Trekker Jon Hill, an ex-soldier who served in Somalia, said Ms King showed “pure, selfless courage”.

“She offered herself up as the leader. Not so much to be taken away. But to defuse the situation,” he said.

“She got hit, we all got beaten, but she got us out safe.”

Melbourne man Glen Reiss described the attack as completely quiet save for some thumping noises.

“It was silent. Except for hacking, slashing and some moaning,” he said.

“The thumping was the sound of a bush knife hacking into human flesh.”

A former trauma nurse at Sydney’s Royal North Shore hospital, Ms King is now helping with the treatment of the injured porters in a Papua New Guinea hospital.

F3 freeway renamed M1 Pacific Motorway

F3 freeway renamed M1 Pacific Motorway

The name may be different but the traffic remains.

The “F3” is no more, with the freeway between Beresfield and Sydney officially renamed as part of the M1 Pacific Motorway yesterday.

It forms part of the state government’s roll out of an alphanumeric system to tell motorists whether they are travelling on a motorway (M), route of national (A) or state significance (B).

The switch is to make road names consistent with those in Queensland and Victoria, but comes at a cost of at least $15 million

An RMS spokeswoman said the motorists would notice new signs being revealed that display the new name.

“Work to update routes across the state started in May this year and is expected to be complete by the end of this year,” she said.

“Electronic signs will remain in place for several weeks to advise motorists and help them transition to the new alphanumeric road numbering system and road names.”

NRMA Hunter director Kyle Loades said road users would need to familiarise themselves with the new names but that the changes made sense.

“The NRMA does endorse it because it will make it easier for motorists not only across the state but Australia,” he said.

The opposition has described the change as a waste of money.

During budget estimates last week, Roads Minister Duncan Gay struggled to supply on the spot some of the new names, but said the government had reduced the costs from the original estimate of $20 million

Labor said it showed motorists would struggle.

Daft Punk – Get Lucky ft. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers

Daft Punk - Get Lucky ft. Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers

Daft Punk is an electronic music duo consisting of French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo (born 8 February 1974) and Thomas Bangalter (born 3 January 1975). Daft Punk reached significant popularity in the late 1990s house movement in France and met with continued success in the years following, combining elements of house with synthpop. The duo is credited with producing songs that are considered essential in the French house scene. It was managed from 1996 to 2008 by Pedro Winter (Busy P), the head of Ed Banger Records. Early in the group’s career, the band members were strongly influenced by groups such as the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones.

Bangalter and de Homem-Christo were originally in a band called Darlin’, which disbanded after a short period of time, leaving the two to experiment musically on their own. The duo became Daft Punk, releasing its critically acclaimed debut album Homework in 1997. The 2001 release of Discovery was even more successful, driven by the club singles “One More Time”, “Digital Love”, and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”.

In March 2005, the duo released the album Human After All to mixed reviews. However, the singles “Robot Rock” and “Technologic” achieved success in the United Kingdom. Daft Punk toured throughout 2006 and 2007 and released the live album Alive 2007, which won a Grammy award for Best Electronic/Dance Album. The duo composed the score of the film Tron: Legacy and in 2010 released the soundtrack album of the film. In January 2013, Daft Punk left EMI Records for Sony Music Entertainment’s subsidiary label Columbia to release its next album.

Daft Punk is noted for its elaborate live shows, in which visual elements and effects are incorporated with the music. The group is known for its emphasis on visual and story components associated with their musical productions. Daft Punk is also known for its use of disguises, particularly the ornate robot costumes, while in public and/or performing.

UB40 – Can’t Help Falling in Love

UB40 – Can’t Help Falling in Love

UB40 - Can't Help Falling in Love

UB40 are a British reggae/pop band formed in 1978 in Birmingham, England. The band has placed more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart, and has also achieved considerable international success. The band has been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, and in 1984, they were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group. One of the world’s best-selling music artists, UB40 have sold over 70 million records. Their hit singles include their debut “Food for Thought” and two U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number ones with “Red Red Wine” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. Both of these also topped the UK Singles Chart, as did the band’s version of “I Got You Babe”.

The story of UB40, and how this group of young friends from Birmingham transcended their working-class origins to become the world’s most successful reggae band is not the stuff of fairytales as might be imagined. The group’s led a charmed life in many respects it’s true, but it’s been a long haul since the days they’d meet up in the bars and clubs around Moseley, and some of them had to scrape by on less than £8 a week unemployment benefit. The choice was simple if you’d left school early. You could either work in one of the local factories, like Robin Campbell did, or scuffle along aimlessly whilst waiting for something else to happen.

By the summer of 1978, something else did happen, and the nucleus of UB40 began rehearsing in a local basement. Robin’s younger brother Ali, Earl Falconer, Brian Travers and James Brown all knew each other from Moseley School of Art, whilst Norman Hassan had been a friend of Ali’s since school. Initially, they thought of themselves as a “jazz-dub-reggae” band, but by the time Robin was persuaded to join and they’d recruited Michael Virtue and Astro – who’d learnt his craft with Birmingham sound-system Duke Alloy – the group had already aligned themselves to left-wing political ideals and forged their own identity, separate from the many punk and Two Tone outfits around at that time. The group had nailed their colours to the mast by naming themselves after an unemployment benefit form. Their political convictions hadn’t been gleaned secondhand either, but cemented in place whilst attending marches protesting against the National Front, or rallies organised by Rock Against Racism.

Sean Connery

Sean Connery

Sean Connery

While one might dispute the actual number of people who would qualify for star status, no one would dispute the premise that Sean Connery is one of them. Moreover, he is not merely a star – he is a super-star.

He began his theatrical career as an extra in the chorus, playing bit parts, and modeling. From those modest beginnings, he has become an international film icon. Many believe that his talent and appeal continue to improve with time.

His humble beginnings, growing up in a working class neighborhood in Edinburgh, gave no indication of the achievements that were destined to come. Sean was born into a working class family in August of 1930. The oldest of two boys, he spent much of his youth working at menial jobs, just to get by. He left school at an early age and went to work fulltime.

At sixteen, he enlisted in the Royal Navy. Like many young men in the Navy, he opted for a tattoo. However, unlike many tattoos, his were not frivolous – his tattoos reflect two of his lifelong commitments: his family and Scotland. After six decades, his tattoos still reflect those two ideas: One tattoo is a tribute to his parents and reads “Mum and Dad,” and the other is self explanatory, “Scotland Forever.”

After three years of Naval service, a long bout with a stomach ulcer shortened his “naval career”. He returned to Edinburgh and seemed to settle into a life of hard work: bricklayer, lifeguard, and coffin polisher. Sean spent much of his free time bodybuilding, a pastime that eventually started his acting career. His hobby of bodybuilding culminated in a bid for the 1950 Mr. Universe title where he placed third.

From his early acting days until his first superstar role, Sean’s stardom was certainly not an over-night success story. From his first work in modeling, bit theatrical parts, and chorus appearances, it was almost eight years before he was cast opposite Lana Turner in Another Time, Another Place (1958). It would be another four years before he first uttered those unforgettable words, “Bond, James Bond.”

Connery skyrocketed to international fame as the suave, confident (and many say definitive) Secret Agent 007 in six of Ian Fleming’s Bond movies over the next decade: Dr. No (1962), Goldfinger (1964), From Russia, With Love (1964), Thunderball (1965), and You Only Live Twice (1967), and Diamonds are Forever (1971).

He then broadened his career with an Agatha Christie whodunit, Murder on the Orient Express (1974), John Huston’s adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s adventure, The Man Who Would Be King (1975), the medieval romance, Robin and Marian (1976), and Peter Hyams’ sci-fi film, Outland (1981). He resurfaced as a much wiser and more mature Bond in the 1983 adventure, Never Say Never Again. For a complete list of his films, see the filmography page.

The 90’s brought such great films as The Hunt for Red October (1990, as a Russian sub commander); and 1993’s Rising Sun (as an expert in all things Japanese); Dragonheart (1996); and the successful contemporary action dramas Just Cause (1995); and The Rock (1996). In 1999, Connery starred in and produced (Fountainbridge Films) Entrapment, a love story-thriller, costarring Catherine Zeta-Jones. The year 2000 brought what many have said to be one of his best films, Finding Forrester. Sean’s latest movie “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” was released in 2003.

Many critics and fans alike have said that the quality of his acting has only improved with age. Certainly his personal appeal has. In 1989, at almost 60 years of age he was voted People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive.” When advised of the award, Sean seemed to be unaffected as he replied, “Well there aren’t many sexy dead men, are there.”

Dragon – Still In Love With You

Dragon – Still In Love With You

Dragon - Are You Old Enough

Dragon formed in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1972, with a line-up that featured Todd Hunter, guitarist Ray Goodwin, drummer Neil Reynolds and singer Graeme Collins; by 1974 several personnel changes had occurred including the introduction of Todd’s brother Marc Hunter on vocals and Neil Storey on drums.

The band recorded two progressive rock albums in New Zealand, Universal Radio and Scented Gardens for the Blind, the second with an added guitar element from Robert Taylor. Paul Hewson also joined the band on keyboards and from this point Dragon’s music took on a pop-flavoured AOR feel.

Dragon eventually landed a contract in Australia with CBS Records and relocated to Sydney in 1975.

Always a lightning rod for controversy, the band was rocked by the heroin overdose death of drummer Neil Storey only weeks after arriving in Australia and their original manager was also deported back to New Zealand on drugs charges. By then, founding member Ray Goodwin had left the group.

Storey was replaced by Kerry Jacobson and, between 1975 and 1979, Dragon scored a string of major hits on the Australasian pop charts with songs including “April Sun in Cuba,” “Are You Old Enough” and “Still in Love With You” and with the albums Sunshine and O Zambezi, making them one of the region’s most popular rock acts.

Marc Hunter left Dragon in 1979 due to health problems which were, by then, seriously affecting his performances. New singer Richard Lee was recruited and the group recorded the Powerplay LP before breaking up in 1979.

Dragon was forced to reform in 1982 to pay off outstanding debts, but they stayed together and decided to have another shot at success. The band’s second comeback single “Rain” proved to be a massive hit, but Kerry Jacobson left the band for health reasons and was replaced by British drummer Terry Chambers, formerly from the band XTC. American keyboard player and producer Alan Mansfield also joined the band at this point.

The group’s 1984 album Body and the Beat became one of the biggest-selling albums in Australia and New Zealand and the band was restored to something close to its late 70s glory. Their public profile was further raised at this time by the Marc Hunter solo album Communication. Its title track became a moderate hit in Australia.

Paul Hewson left Dragon and tragically died of a drug overdose in New Zealand in January 1985, with Terry Chambers and Robert Taylor leaving Dragon some time after. American drummer Doanne Perry replaced Chambers, and Taylor was eventually succeeded by local Sydney guitar ace Tommy Emmanuel.

This line-up recorded the Todd Rundgren-produced Dreams of Ordinary Men album and toured Europe under the name Hunter in 1987, where they were somewhat misrepresented as a heavy metal band in some markets.

Dragon again split up in 1988 although a year later Todd and Marc Hunter and Alan Mansfield reconvened once again with guitarist Randall Waller and drummer Barton Price (ex-Models and The Choirboys) for the 1989 Bondi Road album, which actually featured Tommy Emmanuel’s guitar playing.

Dragon continued to record and tour with varying line-ups centered around the Hunter brothers and Mansfield until 1997, although Todd Hunter had largely retired from the band to do soundtrack work.

In 1998, Marc Hunter was diagnosed with severe throat cancer and died later that year. The compilation CD Forever Young, released on Raven Records, captures many of the highlight tracks of his tumultuous career.

How To Protect Yourself From Bed Bugs In Hotels

How To Protect Yourself From Bed Bugs In Hotels

What you want is a bed bug exterminator that understands these insects and discovers their hiding places as well as how they got into your home in the first place. That way you can not only treat the problem at home, but also be better able to avoid bringing them back. A high quality pest control company can offer you environmentally responsible treatments against these pests and then provide you with a follow-up inspection later.

where do bed bugs come from?? Bed bugs are found all over the world and are more prevalent in underdeveloped countries. They have migrated to the U.S. in recent years, and according to the Centers For Disease Control, their presence is not determined by the cleanliness of the living conditions where they are found. Bed bugs are carried unknowingly on furniture, luggage and other materials, so infestations are more severe in motels, apartments and areas where there is a high amount of human traffic.

To tell the truth, bed bugs treatment is not everyone’s cup of tea! It may sound rude, but yes, the procedure involved in the identification, detection and extermination of bed bugs is really tricky. Still, do not panic whenever surrounded by the question- ‘how to get rid of bed bugs?’ The answer to this is far from being simple.

Where do bed bugs come from get their nourishment through feeding on blood and will prey on you or your pets when you are asleep. Bed Bugs Bites are similar to other insect bites that cause itching, inflammation and redness on the skin of the person bitten. One good thing though is that the tiny insects do not transfer harmful diseases to human beings or animals; but for some persons a bed bug bite could potentially cause severe allergy symptoms that might lead to Anaphylactic Shock!

Empty the cupboards and closets, leaving them empty to eliminate the bugs. Unplug all the electrical appliances for safety purposes. Before you treat your house with chemicals, it would be suggestive to vacuum the entire space. Spray the chemicals on all the furnishings or bedding, including the cracks on the walls or the furniture. Since a few people may be allergic to the chemicals used in the bedbug extermination process, it would be advisable to have the residents stay out until the chemicals are completely dried.

As of the 3rd of June, there had been samples submitted from Contra Costa county, but none have been confirmed positive for West Nile Virus in Mosquitoes. There has been 1 death of a bird attributed to the west nile virus recently in the county. No humans have reported infection.
