Just A Boy – Angus & Julia Stone

Just A Boy – Angus & Julia Stone

Just A Boy - Angus & Julia Stone

We argue about a lot of things, but never about music, says Julia about the relationship she has with her brother Angus. We don’t get on a lot of the time but when it comes to making music it’s always pretty simple for us.

It’s this language of music that forms the basis of Angus & Julia’s debut album A Book Like This a collection of thirteen heartfelt and organic songs that share their experiences and observations with listeners. Together, and with respective singer/songwriter talents, Angus & Julia Stone form two halves of a musical act whose words and music reveal a pure and genuine love of music, and a talent for telling beautiful and beguiling stories.

Raised in the northern beaches of Sydney, Australia, Angus & Julia’s love of music was inextricably intertwined with their experiences of growing up in their musical family. Music was an integral aspect of family life, with music as the bloodline through both their mother and father’s families. A long line of musicians made for an environment that encouraged the duo to express themselves using their voice and any of the many instruments lying around the house.

Mum listened to Janis Ian a lot, but a big part of our childhood was listening to dad’s covers band it was music from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, says Julia of their early influences. It was everything from Van Morrison to The Eagles and The Beatles. We didn’t know any of those bands, we just knew the songs as dad had sung them. It was only a couple of years ago that we listened to The White Album, and thought to ourselves, oh right, these guys are a band – dad didn’t write these songs! ‘

Music continued to play a role in their lives throughout their teenage years. Living at their dad’s place and being unemployed’ish ‘ a state that saw Angus working at odd-jobs as a labourer, and Julia teaching-trumpet the two musicians treated their music as a personal discovery and outlet for their thoughts and observations. When Julia returned home after a year of travelling she encouraged Angus to play his music at some local open-mic nights, and not long after, having helped him out with some backing harmonies, she joined him on stage to play some of her own compositions. That was a mere three years ago. Eventually it worked out that we were doing a split-set, says Julia. It seemed very normal for us and there was no reason not to record together also. It was just easy. Natural, I suppose.

Dr Evil and Mini Me – Just the Two of Us

Dr Evil and Mini Me - Just the Two of Us

Mike Myers is best known as the mad and crude Austin Powers who managed to seduce Liz Hurley despite with his unusual appearance!

Michael John Myers was born on 25 May 1963 in Scarborough, Canada, the son of British-born parents insurance salesman and WWII veteran Eric and his wife Alice. He has two older brothers and holds three citizenships, American, Canadian and British.

He began his acting career as a child, in TV adverts in Canada, and a move to the UK led him to some performances at the Edinburgh Festival.

During his time with a theatre troupe in Chicago, he was spotted by ‘Saturday Night Live‘ producer, Lorne Michaels.

In 1989, he joined the SNL team as a writer and recurring cast member, and he eventually became a regular.

Four years later, Mike debuted as an actor and co-writer in ‘Wayne’s World‘ (1992), based on characters created for ‘Saturday Night Live‘. He then starred in ‘Wayne’s World 2‘ and ‘So I Married An Axe Murderer‘ in 1993. Myers married his first wife Robin Ruzan in May of that year.

They started dating in the late 1980s after meeting at a hockey game in Chicago at which Myers caught a puck and used this as an ice-breaker. Following his marriage, he took a four-year hiatus from television and film.

In 1997, Mike made a successful return as writer and star of ‘Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery‘, a spoof of 1960s spy films. He went on to write and star in ‘Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me‘ in 1999 and ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember‘ in 2002. A fourth Austin Powers has been announced but no further details have been released.

In the year 2000 Mike announced that he planned to star in a film based on his SNL character Dieter, the Germanic host of a programme called Sprockets, but he left the project after expressing displeasure with the final script.

Mike was then sued by Universal for breach of contract. Mike counter-sued and the matter was eventually settled out of court.

As the animated monster in ‘Shrek‘ in 2001, Mike excelled and the film won the Best Animated Film Oscar. This became his second successful movie franchise as he went on to write and voice the lead in ‘Shrek 2‘ (2004), DVD extra ‘Far Far Away Idol‘ (2004), ‘Shrek The Third‘ in 2007, Christmas special ‘Shrek The Halls‘ (2007) and ‘Shrek Forever After‘ in 2010.

More recently Mike has reprised the role of Austin Powers for the third time, and has played the title role in Dr. Seuss’ ‘The Cat in the Hat‘ (2003). Myers has also acted in the main role of ‘The Love Guru‘ (2008) and in a small part in ‘Inglorious Basterds‘ (2009). He continued to appear on ‘Saturday Night Live’ until 2011.

During this period, Myers divorced his wife Robin in 2005 and met café owner Kelly Tisdale, who confirmed they were dating in 2006. They married in New York in 2010 and have a son called Spike, who was born in 2011.

Lets Just Kiss And Say Goodbye – The Manhattans

Lets just kiss and say goodbye – The Manhattans

Lets Just Kiss And Say Goodbye - The Manhattans

The Manhattans were formed in the early 60s in New Jersey as a quintet led by writer/bass vocalist Winfred “Blue” Lovett and emotive lead singer George Smith, along with Edward “Sonny” Bivins, Richard “Ricky” Taylor and Kenneth “Wally” Kelly, all of whom had just returned from service in the armed forces.

The group was popular regionally and had minor national success on the strength of some solid recordings for Carnival Records (their version of the country tune “From Atlanta to Goodbye” was a gem) in the late 60s before gaining the attention of Columbia Records in 1970.  Unfortunately, their Columbia signing coincided with the sudden illness and untimely death of lead singer Smith.  During a tour through North Carolina, the Manhattans came upon a college student with an amazing Sam Cooke-like voice.  Recognizing the incredible talent of this 21 year old, the group invited Gerald Alston to join, and he became the lead singer who would bring stardom to the quintet.

After “Kiss and Say Goodbye,” the Manhattans spent the remainder of the decade scoring almost exclusively on the R&B charts.  Then in 1980, they again surprised the Pop world, crossing over for a Pop top 10 hit with their loping 1980 ballad, “Shining Star.”  The group continued to record through the 80s, hitting on the Soul charts with such hits as “Crazy” and “Honey Honey.”  Their last album for Columbia records was the wonderful but overlooked 1986 disc, Back To Basics, produced in part by Bobby Womack and featuring a young Regina Belle singing background vocals.  Unfortunately, the Manhattans’ smooth, adult soul style seemed out of place in the frenetic, electric funk sounds dominating late 80s music, and they were dropped by Columbia records in 1987.

Pink – Just Give Me A Reason ft. Nate Ruess

Pink – Just Give Me A Reason ft. Nate Ruess

Pink Just Give Me A Reason ft. Nate Ruess

Singer and songwriter Pink, born Alecia Beth Moore, is best known for her edgy pop music. She gained stardom in the 2002 Moulin Rouge soundtrack with Christina Aguilera. Some claim that Pink has changed the scope of pop music and paved the way for artists like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga but has received little recognition for it. She is a prominent animal-rights campaigner for PETA.

Early Life

Singer, songwriter. Born Alecia Beth Moore on September 8, 1979, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Pink, as she’s otherwise known, gets her name from the movie Reservoir Dogs, a film she saw as a teenager and whose character Mr. Pink is someone her friends all agreed she resembled.

Pink was the second child born to Jim and Judy Moore. She experienced a largely typical middle-class life in a suburb of Doylestown, Philadelphia. Her parents’ tense relationship, however, caused the couple to divorce when Pink was 3. Their split and the subsequent demise of the marriage sparked, in part, a rebellious attitude from Pink. “I was never allowed to go over to any of my friends’ houses when I was little, because I was a bad influence,” she said of her early life. “None of their parents liked me and my own parents were scared to death of me— and for me.”

Instead, Pink found solace in music, and as early as the age of 13 she was navigating the complicated Philly club scene. By the time she was 14, she was already an experienced vocalist and dancer, and started to write her own songs. She also had a regular singing gig every Friday night at a Philly nightclub. But it proved to be a hard life for her to manage, as she was swallowed by a world of drugs (she nearly overdosed at the age of 15) and petty crime. She eventually dropped out of high school before returning to earn her G.E.D. in 1998.
